The Pacific Flyway stretches from Alaska to Central and South America. It is the collection of routes taken by birds on their annual migration to and from their breeding grounds. Some birds spend their winter in the Central Valley while others stop by as they continue their journey southward. Yolo Basin Foundation invites members of the public to the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area on Saturday, January 12 from 9 a.m. to noon for a free docent-led tour to view resident and migratory birds.

The rice has been harvested, the fields are flooded, and the birds have arrived for the winter! The flooded rice fields provide excellent wetland habitat for thousands of waterfowl at the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area. Ducks such as Northern Pintails and Northern Shovelers spend their summers in the Arctic and return to the Central Valley for the winters. The skies overhead are filled with large flocks of White-fronted Geese, Snow Geese, and Tundra Swans. Yolo Basin Foundation’s Executive Director, Martha Ozonoff, reminds guests to “use your ears as well as your eyes because you may just hear a flock of birds before you see them!”

To join the tour, meet a few minutes before 9 a.m. in Parking Lot A of the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area, at the west end of the Yolo Causeway. Docents will lead the group along the hard gravel auto tour route and will have spotting scopes to enhance wildlife viewing. Participants may want to bring binoculars and water (there is no potable water on site). Tours run rain or shine, so please dress for the weather. For more information, call Yolo Basin Foundation at (530) 757-3780 or visit yolobasin.org. Directions to the YBWA are also available on their website.

Yolo Basin Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding public appreciation and stewardship of wetlands and wildlife in the Yolo Basin through education and innovative partnerships. The Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area is owned and managed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
